What does the percentile mean?

The percentile shows where your baby stands compared with babies of the same age and sex. The 40th percentile for weight means that out of 100 babies, about 40 weigh less and 60 weigh more. A low or high percentile isn't better or worse. Babies on the 10th or 90th percentile are usually perfectly healthy.

The curve matters more than one number

What counts is that your baby roughly follows their own curve. If a value falls below the 3rd or above the 97th percentile, or your baby moves clearly away from their curve over several measurements, talk to your pediatrician.

Measuring right

Small measuring errors shift the percentile quickly. This keeps your numbers comparable:

  • Weight: naked or in a fresh diaper, ideally always on the same scale
  • Length: lying down, legs gently straightened, from the top of the head to the heel
  • Head circumference: with a tape measure at the widest point, just above the eyebrows and around the back of the head
  • Premature babies: use the corrected age, counted from the due date

Why WHO charts?

The WHO growth standards show how healthy, breastfed babies grow under good conditions, based on a study of children from six countries. The CDC and many pediatric societies recommend them for the first two years.
